Aditya Aryo Nur Kusumo Doctoral Promotion Exam, Islamic Psychological Well-Being Model in Indonesian Muslims

Auditorium of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS – The Graduate School (SPs) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 1682nd Doctoral Promotion Exam in the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 with promovendus Aditya Aryo Nur Kusumo.

Aryo is a student of the Doctoral program in Islamic Studies with a concentration in Islamic Psychology. His dissertation is titled "Islamic Psychological Well-Being Model in Indonesian Muslims: The Influence of Gratitude to God and Religious Orientation with Hope as a Mediator".

Through this research, Aryo seeks to compile and validate  Islamic Psychological Well-Being (IPWB) theories and instruments specifically for adult Muslims. This model integrates  Ryff's conventional concept of psychological well-being (PWB) with the noble values of Islam, while mapping the dynamics of the relationship between gratitude, religious orientation, and hope.

To produce a solid conclusion, Aryo divided his research into two stages of study. The first study focused on the development of the IPWB scale using the statistical methods of Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to test the validity of the designed instrument.

Meanwhile, in the second study, he applied  a mixed methods explanatory sequential design. This approach was deliberately chosen so that the quantitative phase that runs at the beginning can be explored and deepened further through a qualitative phase based on field data.

In the quantitative stage, data analysis is carried out using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). It does not stop there, the qualitative stage then follows with a phenomenological approach through in-depth interviews, which are analyzed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA) and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) in order to obtain a contextual interpretation.

In data collection, this study combines a number of global instruments that have been adapted. Among them are a modification of Ryff's PWB six-factor model,  the Age-Universal Intrinsic/Extrinsic–Revised Scale for religious orientation,  the Gratitude Toward God scale to measure gratitude, and Snyder's Hope Scale to measure the level of hope.

The results of statistical analysis show very interesting findings, where the four-dimensional model of IPWB proved to be the most stable and representative structure. With an excellent level of model compatibility, this new scale is declared valid and reliable for use in the context of Muslim societies.

Through SEM modeling, it was also found that this research model is very fit with empirical data in the field. The results are clearly able to explain how the concrete relationship between gratitude to God, religious orientation, and the expectation factor in influencing a person's IPWB.

In more detail, intrinsic religious orientation, extrinsic-social orientation, and expectations have been proven to play a positive role in IPWB. On the other hand, extrinsic-personal orientation actually has a negative influence on the level of expectation and psychological well-being (IPWB) of individuals.

One unique finding in this research shows that gratitude to God does not have a significant effect on expectations or IPWB directly. However, the qualitative findings complement it by showing that IPWB is essentially formed through a process of deep internalization of religious experience.

Ultimately, these findings have major implications for the academic and practical worlds, where religious orientation has proven to serve as a 'compass of meaning' that gives birth to active, realistic, and transformative hope. The results of this research are expected to enrich contemporary psychological welfare theories and become important evaluation materials for counseling programs and religious policies in Indonesia.

Aryo successfully defended his dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Fadhilah Suralaga, M.Si, Prof. Dr. Rena Latifa, M.Psi, Psychologist and Dr. Gazi, M.Si, and was tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Zulkifli, MA, Prof. Dr. Fadhilah Suralaga, M.Si, Prof. Dr. Rena Latifa, M.Psi, Psychologist, Dr. Gazi, M.Si, Prof. Dr. Achmad Syahid, M.Ag,  Prof. Dr. Sururin, M.Ag and Dr. Yunita Faela Nisa, M.Psi, Psychologists and managed to win the title of Very Satisfactory.

After paying attention to the dissertation writing, the comments of the examiner team and the answers of the promovendus, the examiner team determined that Aditya Aryo Nur Kusumo graduated with the title of Very Satisfactory.  Aditya Aryo Nur Kusumo is the 1682nd Doctor in the field of Islamic Studies, doctoral program of the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.
