Doctoral Promotion Exam Robi Permana: Manhaj of Imam al-Bukhārī in Selecting Hadith Narrated by Shī'ah
Auditorium of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SP NEWS - The Graduate School (SPs) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 1650th Doctoral Promotion Exam in the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA on Thursday, January 8, 2026 with promovendus Robi Permana.
Robi is a student of the Doctoral program in Islamic Studies with a Concentration in Hadith Interpretation. His dissertation was entitled "Manhaj Imam al-Bukhārī in Selecting the Hadith of the Narrated of Shī'ah (A Comparative Study between the Narrator of Shī'ah and Ahl al-Sunnah in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī)". This dissertation presents the findings of in-depth research on the critical methodology of one of the greatest hadith scholars of all time, Imam al-Bukhārī.
This study dissects how the high imam filtered thousands of hadith transmissions in the midst of the dynamics of the very sharp differences of sects and ideologies of his time.
In his presentation, Robi explained that the main focus of his study was to trace the method (manhaj) of Imam al-Bukhārī in receiving narrations from narrators who had affiliations with the Shia sect. Interestingly, these narrators are not just foreign names, but the teachers of Imam al-Bukhārī himself, both those who are categorized as having a mild tashayyu' tendency and those who are considered to be strongly affiliated with the rafḍ ideology.
The background of this research is based on the historical fact that in the process of codifying hadith, Imam al-Bukhārī interacted with cross-regions and backgrounds of thought. Some of the great names recorded in the literature of al-jarḥ wa al-ta'dīl (narrator criticism) as Shi'a-adherents, such as 'Ubaydullāh ibn Mūsā al-'Absī and Abū Nu'aym al-Faḍl ibn Dukayn, turned out to be important references in the preparation of his monumental books.
Despite the theological differences, Robi found that the histories of the narrators were still accommodated in al-Jāmi' al-Ṣaḥīḥ. However, this process is not carried out carelessly, but through a very strict selection process. The parameters of justice ('adālah), the power of memorization (ḍabṭ), the connectedness of sanad (ittiṣāl), and the sterility of the oddity (syużūż) and hidden defects ('ilal) remain the price of death.
The methodology used in this research is qualitative with a descriptive-comparative analysis approach. Robi dug into primary sources ranging from the book Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī to classic works on the biography of narrators such as al-Mizzī's Tahżīb al-Kamāl and Ibn Ḥajar's Tahdhīb al-Tażhīb , in order to compare the quality of the narration between the Shia narrators and the Ahl al-Sunnah.
The results of the study show an enlightening finding: Imam al-Bukhārī never rejected a person's history just because of his sectarian background. As long as the narrator is proven to be ṡiqah (trustworthy) and honest in conveying the text of the hadith, then his history is still accepted as part of the authentic Islamic treasure.
This finding confirms the principle of extraordinary objectivity that Imam al-Bukhārī possessed. He was able to clearly separate personal integrity in narration and a person's ideological tendencies. This shows that scientific credibility transcends the sectarian barriers that are often a barrier to the exchange of knowledge.
Furthermore, Robi asserts that Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī is not just a collection of laws, but a representation of a high level of scientific methodology. The validity of sanad and the honesty of transmission are positioned far above group preference, a standard of research ethics that is actually very relevant to be adopted in today's modern academic world.
The implications of this research give new life to contemporary hadith studies. The manhaj of Imam al-Bukhārī can be used as a reference in building a more inclusive and objective scientific discourse, especially in the face of differences in schools today. This study invites academics to continue to prioritize scientific data and facts amid the often divisive flow of group sentiment.
Robi Permana successfully defended his dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Said Agil Husin Al Munawar, MA, Prof. Dr. M. Suparta, MA and Prof. Dr. Fuad Thohari, M.Ag, and was tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Zulkifli, MA, Prof. Dr. Said Agil Husin Al Munawar, MA, Prof. Dr. M. Suparta, MA, Prof. Dr. Zaitunah Subhan, Prof. Dr. Iik Arifin Mansurnoor, MA and Dr. Lilik Ummi Kaltsum, MA.
