Fenny Raharyanti's Doctoral Promotion Exam, Islamic Boarding School Health Post is Key to Sustainable Environmental Health
Auditorium Prof. Dr Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS: The Graduate School of State Islamic University (SPs UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 1619th Doctoral Promotion Exam at the Auditorium Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta on Tuesday, 22 April 2025 with promovenda Fenny Raharyanti.
Fenny Raharyanti is a student of the Islamic Studies Doctoral programme with a Concentration in Religion and Health. She wrote a dissertation entitled ‘Sanitation Empowerment of Islamic Boarding Schools with the Integration of Islamic Boarding School Health Posts (Poskestren) in the Implementation of Sustainable Environmental Health (Health Belief Model Theory Approach)’.
Fenny Raharyanti's research highlighted the central role of santri participation and the existence of the Pesantren Health Post (Poskestren) in realising sustainable sanitation and environmental health in the pesantren environment. The study, which involved four leading pesantren in Bogor and South Tangerang, as well as four related community health centres, revealed interesting findings regarding the effectiveness of policies and the quality of pesantren environmental health.
The study used a mixed method approach and cross-sectional design to analyse various aspects related to pesantren sanitation. One of the main focuses was to measure the influence of santri participation in sanitation activities using the Health Belief Model approach. The results of multivariate analysis showed that santri's perceived benefits and self-efficacy significantly influenced their cues to action in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the pesantren.
Furthermore, this study also examined the effectiveness of the Minister of Health Regulation (Permenkes) No. 1 Year 2013 on Guidelines for the Implementation and Development of Poskestren. Through the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, an optimistic projection of 50%, moderate 30%, and pessimistic 20% was obtained regarding the implementation of this Permenkes. This means that by strengthening communication, careful planning, and continuous coaching and monitoring programmes from the community health centres, the effectiveness of Poskestren in pesantren can be significantly improved.
Another important finding is related to the quality of environmental health in pesantren. The measurement results show that continuous efforts are needed to maintain and improve the quality of sanitation in all areas of the pesantren in accordance with the quality standards set in Government Regulation No. 28 Year 2024 on Environmental Health. This includes ensuring the quality of clean water, proper waste management, and cleanliness and sanitation of public facilities.
The existence of Poskestren has proven to have great potential in empowering pesantren residents, especially santri, regarding the importance of clean and healthy living behaviour (PHBS). Poskestren is not just a health unit, but the frontline in preventing various health problems in the pesantren environment.
However, this study also underlines that the existence of Poskestren needs to be optimised. Some important aspects that need to be considered are improving facilities and infrastructure, strengthening policies related to pesantren health, fulfilling the number of qualified health workers, implementing real and sustainable health programmes, increasing health education for santri, documenting every health activity, increasing the frequency of santri visits to Poskestren, and continuous efforts to improve santri knowledge about PHBS.
With the active participation of santri driven by awareness of the benefits and self-confidence, as well as optimising the role of Poskestren through targeted policy and program support, pesantren have great potential to create a healthy, clean, and sustainable environment for all its citizens.
Fenny Raharyanti successfully defended her dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Arif Sumantri, M.Kes, Prof. Dr. Didin Saepudin, MA and Dr. Gazi, M.Si and was tested before a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Zulkifli, MA and Prof. Dr. Gazi, M.Si.
