Ahmad Fitroh Doctoral Promotion Exam, Optimizing the Adversity Quotient of Dormitory Students
Auditorium of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS: The Graduate School of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta held the 1629th Doctoral Promotion Exam in the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, on Thursday, July 24, 2025 with promovendus Ahmad Fitroh.
Ahmad Fitroh is a student of the doctoral study program in Islamic Studies with a concentration in Islamic Education. Fitroh wrote a dissertation entitled "Optimizing the Adversity Quotient of Boarding Students (Case Study of Boarding Kafila Islamic International School)"
This study explores the development of Adversity Quotient (AQ) in outstanding students at Madrasah Aliyah Kafila International Islamic School (MA Kafila), Jakarta. Fitroh focuses on analyzing the various challenges faced by students, how AQ coaching is implemented, and its effectiveness in fostering learning resilience, confidence, and academic achievement. These findings are crucial considering that students' learning resilience is often influenced by internal factors such as low motivation and difficulty adapting, as well as external factors such as academic pressure and limited facilities. Therefore, AQ is present as a strategic approach to strengthen students' mentality, spirituality, and independence.
Using a qualitative approach and a multi-case study design, this study collected data through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation from madrasah heads, teachers, and students. Data analysis was carried out interactively, including reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawn, with triangulation techniques used to ensure validity. The active involvement of the researcher in observation is also the key to comprehensively understanding the coaching process that takes place.
One of the interesting findings was the application of the Adversity Quotient at MA Kafila through authoritative parenting, a unique blend of strict discipline and emotional support. AQ's coaching strategy includes mentoring, spiritual guidance, a personal approach, and instilling noble values such as patience, responsibility, and optimism in every student activity. A supportive and democratic dormitory environment proves to be an essential medium in forming religious, independent, and resilient character in students.
The results of the study showed that AQ coaching significantly increased students' fighting power in the face of academic and social pressure. Students with high AQ scores show the character of a "climber", which is an individual who is able to turn every challenge into an opportunity. The positive impact is evident on improving students' academic achievement, discipline, and confidence, proving that the AQ approach is highly relevant and effective.
This study confirms that the AQ approach is very relevant to be applied in boarding madrasah education. This not only fosters learning resilience, but also supports academic achievement and the formation of superior character. Despite the constraints of facilities and resources, integrated authoritative parenting shows a tremendous transformative impact in developing students' potential holistically.
The position and novelty of Ahmad Fitroh's research lies in the integration of Paul G. Stoltz's AQ theory with Islamic educational values, as well as the application of authoritative parenting in the context of dormitories—an area that has not been widely studied. This contribution enriches the understanding of the effectiveness of AQ coaching, especially the role of dormitories as a medium for the formation of resilient and religious behaviors. These findings are conceptual and practical, offering significant contributions to the development of a humanist and resilient national education curriculum and policy in the future.
Ahmad Fitroh successfully defended his dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Husni Rahim and Prof. Dr. Dede Rosyada, MA, and was tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Zulkifli, MA, Prof. Dr. Husni Rahim, Prof. Dr. Dede Rosyada, MA, Prof. Dr. Ulfah Fajarini, M.Si, Prof. Dr. Achmad Syahid, M.Ag and Prof. Dr. Kadir, M.Pd.
