Ahmad Kamil Muntaha's Thesis Exam, Sufism and the Modern Ecological Crisis: A Study of Seyyed Hossein Nasr's Cosmic Ethics
SPs Theater Room UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS - The Graduate School (SPs) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 2801st Thesis Exam at the SPs Theater Room of UIN Jakarta on Friday, February 13, 2026 with candidate Ahmad Kamil Muntaha.
Kamil is a student of the Master of Islamic Studies program with a concentration in Islamic Thought. His thesis is titled "Sufism and the Modern Ecological Crisis: A Study of Seyyed Hossein Nasr's Cosmic Ethics". This thesis is present as an intellectual response to the increasingly worrying destruction of nature in the contemporary era.
This research aims to dissect the construction of Sufism-based ecological thought from the great thinker, Seyyed Hossein Nasr. Ahmad seeks to trace how the crisis of modern human spirituality directly has implications for the destruction of global ecosystems.
Using a qualitative literature research method, Ahmad dissected the data in a descriptive-analytical manner. He uses the Sufism approach to see the extent to which Nasr's thoughts are still relevant in building environmental ethics in the midst of modern lifestyles.
The main data source in this research was taken directly from the primary literature by Seyyed Hossein Nasr, which was then enriched with various articles and other relevant documents. Neat documentation techniques are the main foundation in collecting data for this research.
In his analysis, Ahmad went through the stages of deep thought description to the interpretation of findings. The results show a fundamental fact: Nasr's thinking is grounded in traditional cosmology that sees God, man, and nature as one and only sacred and inseparable entity.
Ahmad emphasized that in the view of Sufism, nature is not just a dead material object. Rather, nature is understood as a manifestation of God's majesty, in which man bears the spiritual responsibility to maintain his balance.
The study highlights that the current ecological crisis is actually just the "tip of the iceberg" of a deeper spiritual crisis. The dominance of materialistic paradigms and anthropocentrism has made humans feel like they are the sole rulers of the universe.
Through the lens of Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Ahmad offers a sharp critique of modernity. He argues that technical solutions and legal regulation alone will not be enough to save the earth as long as the human way of looking at nature does not change.
This thesis expressly states that in the Sufism tradition, nature has sacred value and noble spiritual meaning. This is in stark contrast to the modern paradigm that treats nature as an economic commodity to be exploited without limits.
Interestingly, Ahmad's findings are in line with the views of international experts such as Leslie E. Sponsel and Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee. They agree that the earth needs a spiritual transformation of consciousness, not just an improvement of technological infrastructure.
Ahmad also gave an antithesis to Lynn White Jr.'s theory that once blamed religion for human domination over nature. Through this study, Ahmad actually proves that religion through Sufism is the main key to restoring human relations with the environment.
Sufism can be the framework of the future "Cosmic Ethics". With the end of this exam, Ahmad Kamil Muntaha is expected to be able to make a real contribution to the dialogue between religion and environmental conservation in Indonesia.
Kamil successfully defended his thesis under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Jajat Burhanudin, MA, and was tested in front of an examiner board consisting of Prof. Dr. Yusuf Rahman, MA, Prof. Dr. Bambang Irawan, M.Ag, Prof. Dr. Kholid Al Walid, M.Ag, Dr. Wiwi Siti Sajaroh, M.Ag, Dr. Humaidi, S.Th.I, M.Ud.
After paying attention to the thesis writing, the comments of the examiner team and the candidate's answers, the examiner team determined that Ahmad Kamil Muntaha graduated with the title of Very Satisfactory. Ahmad Kamil Muntaha is the 2801st Master in the field of Islamic Studies, in the Master's program of the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. (JA)
