Ali Machzumi's Doctoral Promotion Exam: The Relevance of the Hajj and Umrah Management Study Program Curriculum to the Governance of Hajj and Umrah Implementation
Auditorium of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS - The Graduate School (SPs) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 1652nd Doctoral Promotion Exam in the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA on Monday, January 12, 2026 with the promovendus Jantarda Mauli Hutagalung.
Ali Machzumi is a student of the Doctoral program in Islamic Studies with a Concentration in Islamic Education. His dissertation is entitled "The Relevance of the Curriculum of the Hajj and Umrah Management Study Program to the Governance of the Implementation of Hajj and Umrah (Study on the Hajj and Umrah Management Study Program at UIN Walisongo Semarang and IAIN Metro Lampung)".
Ali highlighted how the curriculum in higher education is often not in tune with the dynamics of the governance of the implementation of Hajj and Umrah which are increasingly complex in Indonesia.
In his presentation, Ali revealed the existence of a unique but challenging "institutional dualism". On some campuses, the Hajj and Umrah Management (MHU) study program is under the Faculty of Da'wah, while on other campuses it is under the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business. This difference in "home" apparently has a significant impact on the profile of the graduates produced.
Through case studies at UIN Walisongo Semarang and IAIN Metro Lampung, Ali found a sharp contrast. UIN Walisongo tends to focus on the aspects of da'wah and manasik guidance. On the contrary, IAIN Metro emphasizes the side of sharia management and entrepreneurship, showing that there is no uniform competency standardization at the national level.
The most surprising finding of this study is the mismatch or mismatch between alumni competencies and industry needs. Ali said that the current curriculum is not fully responsive to the demands of the times, especially in mastery of digital technology, fluency in foreign languages, and practical skills in the field.
This data is strengthened by a comparison with previous research by Fakhrizi (2022) which shows the low absorption of MHU alumni in the world of work. This is an alarm for the academic world that a bachelor's degree alone is not enough if it is not equipped with specific skills needed by the bureaucracy and private Hajj-Umrah travel.
Ali also conducted comparative studies with foreign institutions, such as um Al-Qura University and King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia. As a result, these campuses are much more advanced in integrating internship systems and field practices systematically, a model that he says should be adapted immediately in Indonesia.
This qualitative research with a sociological and phenomenological approach is not only critical, but also offers solutions. Ali encourages the integration of strong Islamic values with modern managerial competencies so that MHU study program graduates have high competitiveness, both locally and globally.
The implications of these findings are expected to be able to be the basis for the Ministry of Religion and the Ministry of Education in evaluating religious higher education policies. Strengthening an adaptive curriculum is the key so that MHU scholars are no longer spectators in the midst of the rapidly growing Hajj and Umrah industry.
This dissertation is a real contribution to the development of Hajj governance in Indonesia. Now, the next challenge is how these academic recommendations can be implemented into real policies in university classrooms.
Ali Machzumi successfully defended his dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Ahmad Tholabi Kharlie, S.Ag, SH, MH, MA; Prof. Dr. JM Muslimin, MA, and tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Zulkifli, MA; Prof. Dr. Dede Rosyada, MA; Prof. Dr. Abuddin Nata, MA; Suparto, M.Ed, Ph.D; Prof. Muhammad Zuhdi, M.Ed, Ph.D; Prof. Dr. M. Arief Mufraini, Lc., M.Si; Prof. Dr. Kadir, M.Pd.
After paying attention to the writing of the dissertation, the comments of the examiner team and the answers of the promovendus, the examiner team determined that Ali Machzumi graduated with the title of Very Satisfactory. Ali Machzumi is the 1652nd Doctor in the field of Islamic Studies, in the doctoral program of the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. (JA)
