Asep Nuhdi's Doctoral Promotion Exam, the Development of Hadith Science in Modern Indonesia
Auditorium Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, NEWS SPs: The Graduate School of the State Islamic University (SPs UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 1618th Doctoral Promotion Exam at the SPs UIN Jakarta Theater Room on Thursday, February 27, 2025 with the promovendus Asep Nuhdi.
Asep Nuhdi is a student of the Doctoral Program in Islamic Studies with a Concentration in Hadith and Prophetic Traditions. He wrote a dissertation entitled "The Development of Hadith Science in Modern Indonesia (A Case Study of the Thought of Sheikh Yazid bin Abdul Qadir Jawas and Sheikh Nuruddin al-Banjari al-Makky)".
Asep Nuhdi's research is focused on a comparative analysis of the hadith understanding methods used by two modern Indonesian scholars, namely Sheikh Yazid bin Abdul Qadir Jawas and Sheikh Nuruddin al-Banjari al-Makky. Both are known to have different thoughts in understanding hadith, especially those related to faith and law.
In his dissertation, Asep Nuhdi explained that Sheikh Nuruddin al-Banjari al-Makky tends to use textual and contextual understanding methods. One example is in his work on the prohibition of cigarettes, where he understands the hadith "La Darar wa la Dirar" by considering various aspects, both sharia postulates and empirical facts and social reality.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jawas's thoughts are considered to support Al-Albani's opinion as outlined by Lacroix in "Al-Albani's Revolutionary Approach of Hadith", namely the theory of functionalism. Hadith as an independent source of Islamic law, according to Jawas's thinking, places the study of fiqh very colored by the study of rijal hadith.
This research also agrees with Sheikh Al-Hurr who uses a logical system in understanding the hadith. On the contrary, Asep Nuhdi supports Al-Dialwi's opinion that uses the descriptive analysis method to balance rationalists and traditionalists. In addition, this research also supports Hasep Saputra's research on the development of hadith studies in Indonesia.
Asep Nuhdi successfully defended his dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Said Agil Husin Al Munawar, MA and Prof. Dr. Zaitunah Subhan and was tested in front of a panel of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Yusuf Rahman, MA, Prof. Dr. Zaitunah Subhan, Prof. Dr. Asep Usman Ismail, M.Ag, Prof. Dr. Murodi, MA and Prof. Kusmana, MA, Ph.D.
After paying attention to the writing of the dissertation, the comments of the examining team and the promovendus answers, the examining team determined that Asep Nuhdi was declared to have graduated with the title of Very Satisfactory and became the 1618th Doctor in the field of Islamic Studies at the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.(JA)
