Bader Fahad A Bin Jadid's Thesis Test, Work Concept and Professionalism from Ibn Khaldun's Perspective to the Contemporary Era

SPs Theater Room UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS: The Graduate School of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta held the 2778th Thesis Exam at the SPs Theater Room of UIN Jakarta, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 with candidate Bader Fahad A Bin Jadid.

Bader is a student of the Master of Islamic Studies study program with a concentration in Islamic Economics. Bader wrote a thesis entitled "ابن خلدون والاحتراف في الموارد البشرية المراجعة بين النظرية والتطبيقية في عصرنا الحالي" (Ibn Khaldun and Human Resource Professionalism: A Review between Theory and Application in Our Current Era).

This research fundamentally aims to analyze the concept of work and professionalism in human resource management, based on the humanist theory of Ibn Khaldun (1406 AD).

Through a qualitative-comparative approach, this study not only examines Ibn Khaldun's thoughts, but also carefully compares them with Peter F. Drucker's pragmatic meritocratic management theory (1954) contained in his work "Innovation and Entrepreneurship," as well as Masaaki Imai's Kaizen management theory (2023) from the book "Kaizen: The Key to Japan's Competitive Success." The main focus lies in the concept of work and the professionalism of human resource management that Ibn Khaldun described in his monumental book, Muqaddimah.

The central argument of this thesis is that although Ibn Khaldun's work was born in the 14th century AD, the foundations of his thought had the potential for significant influence on the concept of Kaizen Imai. However, on the other hand, this study finds a lack of similarities between Ibn Khaldun's thought and Drucker's pragmatic meritocratic management thinking, especially in the aspects of division of labor, specialization, work morality, and the fairness of wage distribution and workers' rights.

In the view of Ibn Khaldun (d. 808 H/1406 AD), work is not just a means of earning income, but is an essential foundation for the development of civilization (umran) and the prosperity of society. This thesis strongly supports Maslow's (1943) theory of needs and McGregor's (1960) theory of motivation, both of which are characterized by an emphasis on the humanistic aspect of the work context.

Instead, the study emphatically rejects the mechanistic and bureaucratic approach popularized by Frederick Taylor (1911) and Max Weber (1922). These approaches tend to ignore the moral and social justice aspects, which are precisely the core and spirit of Ibn Khaldun's thinking on human resource management.

Furthermore, the results of this study show strong alignment with the principles  of maqasid sharia, especially in an effort to maintain justice and workers' welfare. This harmony is reinforced by reference to the thoughts of great scholars such as al-Ghazali (1111 AD), al-Syatibi (1388 AD), and contemporary scholar Jasser Auda (2008), all of whom emphasize the importance of justice in every aspect of life, including the world of work.

Bader Fahad A Bin Jadid's thesis not only presents a rich historical review, but also offers a fresh and relevant perspective for human resource management practices in the modern era. By exploring past wisdom and comparing it with contemporary theories, this research paves the way for the development of a more humanistic, equitable, and sustainable management model.

Bader Fahad A Bin Jadid successfully defended his thesis under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Desmadi Saharuddin, MA, and was tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Yusuf Rahman, MA; Prof. Dr. Desmadi Saharuddin, MA; Prof. Dr. JM Muslimin, MA; Prof. Dr. Iik Arifin Mansurnoor, MA.

After paying attention to the thesis writing, the comments of the examiner team and the candidate's answers, the examiner team determined that Bader Fahad A Bin Jadid graduated with the predicate of Very Satisfactory. Bader Fahad A Bin Jadid is the 2778th master in the field of Islamic Studies, in the master's program of the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. (JA)
