Benny Herlena's Doctoral Promotion Exam, The Influence of The Big Five Personality and Spiritual Intelligence on the Professionalism of Traffic Police

Auditorium Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS: The Graduate School of the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta held the 1630th Doctoral Promotion Exam in the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, on Monday, July 28, 2025 with promovendus Benny Herlena.

Benny Herlena is a student of the doctoral study program in Islamic Studies with a concentration in Islamic Psychology. Benny wrote a dissertation entitled "The Influence of The Big Five Personality and Spiritual Intelligence on Traffic Police Professionalism through Perceived Supervisor Mediation Moral Engagement"

This research offers a new perspective on the crucial factors that shape professionalism among police officers.

Benny's research stemmed from a desire to examine how personality traits ("The Big Five Personalities") and spiritual intelligence ("Spiritual Intelligence") affect an individual's professionalism, either directly or indirectly through perceptions of supervisor moral engagement. Involving 217 police personnel from the Highway Patrol Unit of the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia, this research provides a comprehensive picture of psychological dynamics in the police environment.

Using the Structural Equation Modeling Partial Least Squares approach, Benny managed to show that the research model he proposed had an excellent statistical and psychometric match. The descriptive and predictive capabilities of this model have also proven to be strong, providing high validity to the findings produced. This confirms that Benny's approach is able to uncover complex relationships between variables with high accuracy.

One of the most significant findings was the positive and significant influence of The Big Five Personality on professionalism and perception of the moral involvement of superiors. This means that individuals with positive personality traits tend to show a higher level of professionalism and have a better view of the moral integrity of their leaders. These findings highlight the importance of selection and character development in the recruitment and coaching of police members.

Not only that, Spiritual Intelligence has also been proven to have a positive and significant influence on these two variables. This suggests that an individual's ability to interpret and respond to issues spiritually can substantially improve their professionalism, while reinforcing a positive perception of leadership morality. This aspect of spiritual intelligence is often overlooked, even though it has a vital role in shaping work ethic and integrity.

In addition, this study clearly shows that Perceived Supervisor Moral Engagement has a positive and significant effect on professionalism. This means that the higher the perception of a policeman towards the moral involvement of his superiors, the higher the level of professionalism he shows. This underlines the crucial role of leadership with integrity and being an example in encouraging professionalism in the ranks of the police.

Benny's research model also showed very strong explanatory skills, with an R-square (R2) value of 55.8% for Professionalism and 70.1% for Perceived Supervisor Moral Engagement. The predictive relevance (Q2) value of 0.361 for Professionalism and 0.428 for Perceived Supervisor Moral Engagement further strengthens the model's predictive ability. The results of this study provide a valuable foundation for the development of effective programs and policies to improve professionalism among police members, emphasizing that personality factors, spiritual intelligence, and perception of leadership morality are the main pillars in forming a professional and integrity police force.

Benny Herlena successfully defended his dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Abdul Mujib, M.Ag, M.Si and Prof. Dr. Rena Latifa, M.Psi, Psychologist, and was tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Zulkifli, MA, Prof. Dr. Abdul Mujib, M.Ag, M.Si, Prof. Dr. Achmad Syahid, M.Ag, Prof. Dr. Kadir, M.Pd and Dr. Diana Mutiah, M.Si.
