Auditorium of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS - The Graduate School (SPs) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 2821st Thesis Exam at the SPs Theater Room of UIN Jakarta on Friday, July 24, 2026 with candidate Burhanuddin Siregar.

Burhanuddin is a student of the Master of Islamic Studies program with a Concentration in Interdisciplinary Interpretation. His thesis is entitled "Reception of the Suzuki Magnet Book: A Critical Study of the CTMR Community's Understanding of the Concept of Sustenance in the Qur'an". Burhanuddin presented the results of an in-depth study that examined the dynamics of the meaning of Qur'anic verses in the discourse of modern economic spirituality.

This scientific research specifically aims to examine the reception of the members  of the Certified Trainer Magnet Sustenance (CTMR) to the concept of sustenance in the Qur'an as understood through the guidance  of the Sustenance Magnet Book. The main focus of the study lies in how the collective meaning of the verses of sustenance is internalized and implemented into spiritual practices, economic activities, and daily life as a tangible manifestation of  the Living Qur'an phenomenon.

In its main argument, this study reveals that the popular reinterpretation of the verses of sustenance in the discourse of contemporary economic spirituality takes place through four closely related patterns: spiritualization, simplification, psychoization, and instrumentalization. These patterns are present to simplify the text and meaning of the verse of sustenance so that it is much easier to understand and apply directly by the general public.

Not only simplifying the text, the process has proven to be successful in forming a new system of religious meaning and practice in society. This system is then actively and massively disseminated by  certified trainers to the wider community, thus creating a new wave of meaning to the concept of welfare and sustenance in Islam.

To distinguish its academic position, this study takes a different perspective from the study of Ahmad Rafiq (2014) who previously reviewed the reception of the Qur'an in general in the Indonesian Muslim community. Burhanuddin chose to focus specifically on the meaning of sustenance verses within the scope of certain spiritual-economic communities that have unique characteristics.

In order to explore this phenomenon in its entirety, this study applies a qualitative method through a case study approach. Field data collection was carried out comprehensively through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, documentation studies, and dissecting the main text from the book Magnet Suzuki.

In terms of theoretical framework, this study marries Hans Robert Jauss's theory of reception to dissect how the CTMR community receives and responds to the verses of sustenance, with Clifford Geertz's symbolic theory. Geertz's approach is used sharply to interpret socio-religious practices and symbols of meaning that are firmly established within the community.

The results of the study show that the CTMR community interprets sustenance not limited to material or financial forms alone. For them, sustenance covers a much wider spectrum such as inner peace, improving the quality of worship, harmony in social relations, and spiritual closeness to Allah SWT. This meaning develops into a vibrant religious culture and continues to be strengthened through gradual training and ongoing mentoring by trainers.

These findings not only strengthen the reception theory of Hans Robert Jauss (1982) and Ahmad Rafiq's (2014) study that the meaning of religious texts is always dynamically shaped by their readers, but also enriches the study of Rahim (2022). If previous research saw the Magnet of Sustenance as limited to theological simplification, Burhanuddin's findings prove that this phenomenon has transformed into a system of meaning, spiritual practices, and religious culture that has a real impact on daily life.

Burhanuddin successfully defended his thesis under the guidance of Dr. Eva Nugraha, M.Ag, and was tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Yusuf Rahman, MA, Dr. Eva Nugraha, M.Ag, Prof. Kusmana, MA, Ph.D, Prof. Dr. Saifuddin Herlambang, MA.

After paying attention to the thesis writing, the comments of the examiner team and the candidate's answers, the examiner team determined that Burhanuddin Siregar graduated with the title of Very Satisfactory. Burhanuddin Siregar is the 2821st Master in the field of Islamic Studies, in the Master's program of the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. (Jay A)
