Dr. Taher Mohammad T. Jari Reveals the Impact of Google Meet in Teaching Arabic Linguistics

Auditorium Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, BERITA SEKOLAH: The Graduate School of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta held its 1540th doctoral dissertation examination in the Prof. Auditorium. Dr. Suwito, MA on Tuesday, March 26 2024 with promovendus Taher Mohammad T. Jari.

Taher Mohammad is a student in the Islamic Studies Doctoral Study Program, concentrating in Arabic Language Education. He wrote a dissertation entitled أثر تطبيق فوقل ميت في تعليم اللغة العربية للناطقين بغيرها: دراسة وصفية على طلاب معهد العلوم الإسلامية والعربية بجاكرتا”.

This doctoral promotion examination was chaired by the Chair of the Islamic Studies Doctoral Program who also doubles as examiner, Prof. Dr. JM Muslimin, MA, with examiners: Prof. Dr. H.D Hidayat, MA; Prof. Dr. Achmad Satori Ismail, MA; Prof. Dr. lik Arifin Mansurnoor, MA; and as promoter Prof. Dr. Abuddin Nata, MA; Prof. Ahmad Thib Raya, MA, and Dr. Muhbib Abdul Wahab, MA.

This research written by Taher Mohammad found a gap in his research. In his findings, it was revealed that the Google Meet electronic application type had an impact on non-Arabic speakers at the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences (LIPIA) in 2 ways, namely linguistic and social. Moreover, Saudi Arabia was one of the first countries to pioneer the world of educational technology, this is proven by the involvement of Imam Muhammad bin Saud University in Riyadh with LIPIA Jakarta which organizes educational processes through educational technology applications.

Taher Mohammad also mentioned that there are conditions that must be met by students as an important element in the learning system, for example when this application was used quite massively when the COVID-19 outbreak hit.

At least, Taher Mohammad revealed 3 findings in his research: first, there was no effect of using the Google Meet application in solving problems faced by students studying Arabic for non-Arabic speakers in the LIPIA Jakarta Linguistics department, where the significance level reached 0.83% , while the significance of using the Google Meet application in improving Arabic language teaching skills for non-Arabic speakers in the LIPIA Jakarta Linguistics department reaches 0.0%, which is less than 0.5%.

The Google Meet application has a number of advantages and features in supporting Arabic language learning for non-Arabic speakers majoring in Linguistics LIPIA Jakarta, such as ease of use, although there are several obstacles, especially the inability of some students to get gadgets.

Third, the results of this research are in line with several previous studies regarding the problems faced in implementing electronic devices in learning, and are also in line with research that supports e-learning theory and its positive role.

Taher Mohammad T Jari successfully defended his dissertation before the board of examiners, and was entitled to obtain the 1540th doctoral degree in the field of Islamic studies with a very satisfactory distinction. (Tiara/JA)
