Esmail Abdullah Hussein al-Falahi Doctoral Promotion Exam: Exploring the Path of Reasoning in the Appointment of Imams
Auditorium Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SCHOOL NEWS: The Graduate School of the State Islamic University (SPs UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 1608th Doctoral Promotion Exam in the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA on Monday, February 24, 2025 with Promovendus Esmail Abdullah Hussein Al-Falahi.
Esmail Abdullah Hussein Al-Falahi, a student of the Doctoral Study Program in Islamic Studies with a concentration in Sharia, wrote a dissertation with the title "مسالك التعليل في نصب الإمام دراسة فقهية مقارنة في فتاوى العلماء المعاصرين". This dissertation explores the lines of reasoning in Islamic legislation, especially in the context of the appointment of imams or leaders. Esmail explores the differences and similarities between past and present practices, and identifies the reasoning semantics behind each decision and the reasons that accompany it.
In his research, Esmail uses analytical, descriptive, and comparative approaches. He compares the reality of ancient and contemporary assessments regarding elections, democracy, and the assumption of women in the presidency, with reference to the fatwas of contemporary scholars.
The results of this study make a significant contribution in defining the legal foundations and their paths, clarifying ambiguous terms, and identifying the stages of reasoning in various issues related to the appointment of caliphs or imams. Esmail also examines the fatwas of contemporary scholars on the appointment of rulers, weighs them, and examines the parts of the guardianship by referring to the legal foundations and opinions of the mujtahid imams.
Esmail specifically discusses issues related to the caliphate and caliphate through the perspective of the reasoning of jurists, as well as the methods of reasoning in the appointment of imams through contemporary means such as democracy.
Esmail Abdullah Hussein Al-Falahi successfully defended his dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Said Agil Husin Al Munawar, MA, Prof. Dr. JM Muslimin, MA and was tested in front of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. JM Muslimin, MA, Prof. Kusmana, MA, Ph.D, Prof. Dr. Asmawi, M.Ag, Prof. Dr. Iik Arifin Mansurnoor, MA.
After paying attention to the writing of the dissertation, the comments of the examining team and the candidates' answers, the examining team determined that Esmail Abdullah Hussein Al-Falahi was declared to have graduated with the predicate Laude and became the 1608th Doctor in the field of Islamic Studies at the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.
