Auditorium of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS – The Graduate School (SPs) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 1726th Doctoral Promotion Exam in the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA Graduate School on Monday, August 24, 2026 with promovendus Fuji Zakiyatul Fikriyah.

Fuji is a student of the Doctoral program in Islamic Studies with a concentration in Islamic Education. His dissertation is entitled "Sexuality Education at Al-Asror Islamic Boarding School, Jombang, East Java and Al-Hidayah Islamic Boarding School, Lebak, Banten". Fuji defended his dissertation which raised a crucial but often considered sensitive issue: sexuality education in the Islamic boarding school environment.

Fuji dissected how sexuality discourse and education live in the midst of pesantren dynamics. This comparative research aims to reveal the concept, perception of pesantren actors, and the real form of its implementation in the curriculum.

Using a qualitative approach with a multiple case study design, the data in this research was collected comprehensively. Fuji explored information through in-depth interviews, non-participant observations, and tracing of institutional documents, ranging from curriculum structures, fiqh books, teaching materials, to student discipline in both locations.

The data analysis process was carried out carefully through in-case and cross-case reading using two-cycle coding, thematic analysis, triangulation, and member checking. The results confirm that sexuality education in pesantren has never been absent, but rather is present as part of the practice of moral-spiritual education that is firmly rooted in the fiqh tradition.

Findings in the field show differences in delivery models in each institution. At the Al-Asror Islamic Boarding School in Jombang, the transmission of sexuality education mainly flows through the recitation of the yellow book and fiqh studies which are arranged in stages according to the level of students.

Meanwhile, the Al-Hidayah Lebak Islamic Boarding School applies a more varied approach. In addition to relying on formal fiqh, sexuality education at this pesantren is synergized with biology/science lessons, the enforcement of daily disciplines, and various student support activities.

All elements of the Islamic boarding school, both leaders, teachers, and students, see sexuality education as very important. Nevertheless, it was agreed that the delivery must remain in the corridor of manners, use polite language, be adjusted to the age level, and adhere to halal-haram limits.

The novelty of Fuji's research lies in its success in integrating aspects of concepts, perceptions, and practices in its entirety. If previous studies tended to focus partially on one pesantren, book texts, or the issue of sexual violence alone, this research actually offers a new idea of fiqh-based moral-spiritual sexuality education.

This model combines the principle of abstinence-only (taking care of oneself until marriage) with a comprehensive educational framework. This approach not only equips students with biological and fiqh understanding, but also touches on aspects of the right to bodily safety, touch limits, the courage to refuse and report, and protection mechanisms from sexual violence.

Through these findings, Fuji emphasizes the argument that pesantren are not empty of sexuality education. Nevertheless, Islamic boarding schools still need to strengthen a curriculum that is more explicit, systematic, and gradual in order to be more responsive to the biological, psychological, social, and safety needs of students in the modern era.

Fuji successfully defended his dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Maila Dinia Husni Rahiem, MA, Ph.D and Prof. Arif Zamhari, M.Ag, Ph.D, and was tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Zulkifli, MA, Prof. Maila Dinia Husni Rahiem, MA, Ph.D, Prof. Arif Zamhari, M.Ag, Ph.D, Prof. Dr. Sururin, M.Ag, Prof. Muhammad Zuhdi, M.Ed, Ph.D, Prof. dr. After paying attention to the writing of the dissertation, the comments of the examiner team and the answers of the promovendus, the examiner team determined that Fuji graduated with the title of Very Satisfactory.  Fuji Zakiyatul Fikriyah is the 1726th Doctor in the field of Islamic Studies, doctoral program of the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.
