Habib Al Rahman Thesis Exam, Grants and Family Conflict Prevention
Theater Room SPs UIN Jakarta, SCHOOL NEWS: The Graduate School of the State Islamic University (SPs UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 2755th Thesis Exam at the SPs UIN Jakarta Theater Room, on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 with Candidate Habib Al Rahman.
Habib Al Rahman is a student of the Master of Islamic Studies Study Program with a concentration in Sharia. He wrote a thesis entitled "Grants and Prevention of Family Conflicts: A Study of Grant Practice in the Betawi Community of Pondok Pinang".
Habib Al Rahman's research revealed that grants in the Betawi community of Pondok Pinang are not just a distribution of property, but a unique conflict resolution strategy. The process is also interesting, involving family deliberations where all children gather to determine their rights before the property is measured and divided.
This thesis finds three main factors underlying this grant practice, namely the desire of parents to ensure the future and harmony of the family, avoid inheritance conflicts, and uphold family values. These factors make grants an effective and flexible solution in preventing family conflicts.
However, this grant practice cannot be separated from the dynamics of family relationships and applicable social norms. Agreements made through deliberation are not always fair to all parties, reflecting the complexity of family relationships.
This research is in line with the views of Dandia Magna Rijkova (2016) and Hasman Zhafiri Muhammad (2023) who see grants as an alternative to preventing inheritance conflicts. However, this thesis criticizes the view of Widhy Andrian Pratama (2024) who states that grants can actually cause disputes.
Habib Al Rahman's findings provide new insights into grant practices in the Betawi community and its potential as a solution to prevent family conflicts. This research also opens up a space for further discussion regarding the implementation of grants that are fair and in accordance with applicable legal norms.
Habib Al Rahman successfully defended his thesis under the guidance of Prof. Dr. JM Muslimin, MA and Mohammad Adnan, LL.M, Ph.D, and was tested in front of a panel of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Yusuf Rahman, MA, Prof. Dr. JM Muslimin, MA, Mohammad Adnan, LL.M, Ph.D, Prof. Dr. H. Abd. Rahman, MA and Prof. Dr. Mesraini, M.Ag.
After paying attention to the writing of the thesis, the comments of the examiner team and the candidate's answers, the examiner team determined that Habib Al Rahman was declared to have graduated with the title of Very Satisfactory and became the 2755th master's degree in Islamic Studies at the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.
