Khalid Ibrahim H Alhassan's Doctoral Promotion Exam, Unravelling the Secret of Bank Al Rajhi's Success: The Power of Sharia-Based Leadership

Auditorium of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SP NEWS – The Graduate School (SPs) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 1715th Doctoral Promotion Exam in the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA Graduate School on Friday, August 5, 2026 with promovendus Khalid Ibrahim H Alhassan.

Khalid is a student of the Doctoral program in Islamic Studies with a concentration in Islamic Economics. His dissertation is titled "المبادئ الشرعية في القيادة ودورها في تطوير المؤسسة الاقتصادية: دراسة حالة بنك الراجحي".

The dissertation explores in depth how the application of sharia leadership principles directly contributes to the growth and resilience of Islamic financial institutions, by making Al Rajhi Bank in Saudi Arabia the main object of study.

In his research presentation, Khalid tested the implementation of the six pillars of sharia leadership, namely ethics, responsibility, justice, deliberation (shura), servant leadership, and strategic vision. This investigation dissects how these noble values are transformed into the day-to-day operational governance of the bank.

This research uses a comprehensive mixed-methods approach to ensure the accuracy of the data. The researcher distributed a questionnaire to 150 respondents consisting of 120 employees and 30 managers and conducted in-depth interviews with 10 Islamic banking experts, enhanced by an analysis of Al Rajhi Bank's internal documents and reports.

In order to process complex data, this study utilizes NVivo software for qualitative analysis of thematic coding and Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) for quantitative testing. The results of the analysis confirm that all pillars of sharia leadership have proven to have a significant positive impact on the overall performance of banks.

Among the six pillars, the combination of servant leadership and a culture of deliberation (syura) has been proven to have the most dominant influence in increasing employee happiness, loyalty, and productivity. Meanwhile, the principles of ethics and justice have succeeded in strengthening the institution's reputation, building a climate of integrity, and attracting the trust of new customers.

Not only focusing on the human resource aspect, leadership with a sharp vision and accountability is also recorded to trigger sustainable new product and financial service innovations. However, the study also highlights some real challenges on the ground, such as the high complexity of regulations and the crucial importance of ongoing leadership training for executives and staff.

The main advantage of Khalid's research lies in the practical case study approach of Al Rajhi Bank, an institution that has successfully proven high profitability based on sharia compliance. Different from previous literature (such as the works of M. Al-Aqli, H.M. Said Bulbigh, or E. Engel & L.W. Fry) which tend to be theoretical, this study presents a complete picture of the real impact of Islamic leadership on organizational behavior, innovation, and business growth in the modern banking industry.

Khalid successfully defended his dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. JM Muslimin, MA, Prof. Dr. Iik Arifin Mansurnoor, MA, and Prof. Dr. Zubair, M.Ag, and was tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Yusuf Rahman, MA, Prof. Dr. JM Muslimin, MA, Prof. Dr. Iik Arifin Mansurnoor, MA, Prof. Dr. Zubair, M.Ag, Prof. Dr. Asep Usman Ismail,  M.Ag, Prof. Dr. Rusli, S.Ag, M.Soc.Sc, Prof. Dr. Desmadi Saharuddin, MA.

After paying attention to the writing of the dissertation, the comments of the examiner team and the answers of the promovendus, the examiner team determined that Khalid graduated with the title of Very Satisfactory.  Khalid Ibrahim H Alhassan is the 1715th Doctor in the field of Islamic Studies, a doctoral program of the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.
