Auditorium Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SCHOOL NEWS: The Graduate School of the State Islamic University (SPs UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 1607th Doctoral Promotion Exam in the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA on Friday, February 21, 2025 with the promovendus M. Agus Suriadi.

Agus Suriadi, a student of the Doctoral Study Program in Islamic Studies with a concentration in Arabic Language and Literature, wrote a dissertation entitled "Translation and Islamic Discourse: A Study of the Translation Results of Anas Mahyuddin in the Book of Understanding Islam by Frithjof Schuon".

In his dissertation, M. Agus Suriadi uses a multidimensional approach that combines Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) with the perspective of Critical Translation Studies to reveal hidden biases in the translation process. He analyzes how the choice of words, sentence structure, and language style used by the translator can affect the reader's interpretation of the message that the writer wants to convey.

The results of M. Agus Suriadi's research show that the translation of the book "Understanding Islam" by Anas Mahyuddin is not completely neutral and objective. He found that there is an ideological shift in translation, where some terms and concepts are changed or modified to suit the cultural context and ideology of the target reader. This can of course affect the reader's understanding of Islam and Schuon's view of this religion.

This research has far-reaching implications for Islamic studies and translation. M. Agus Suriadi succeeded in showing that translation is not just a process of language transfer, but also an act of interpretation involving ideological and cultural values. His findings can be the basis for the development of critical discourse analysis methodologies in translation studies, as well as provide new insights into the role of translation in cross-cultural discourse.

Agus Suriadi successfully defended his dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Sukron Kamil, MA, Prof. Dr. Ratna Sari Dewi, M.Pd, Prof. Dr. Darsita S, M.Hum and in front of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Zulkifli, MA, Prof. Dr. Sukron Kamil, MA, Prof. Dr. Ratna Sari Dewi, M.Pd, Prof. Dr. Darsita S, M.Hum, Prof. Dr. Rd. After paying attention to the writing of the dissertation, the comments of the examining team and the promovendus answers, the examining team determined that M. Agus Suriadi was declared to have graduated with the title of Very Satisfactory and was appointed as the 1607th doctor in the field of Islamic Studies at the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.(JA)
