Madarina Rozanah Thesis Exam: The Implementation of the Teachings of al-'Adl al-Ilāhī in the Practice of Shi'ah Philanthropy

Auditorium of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS - The Graduate School (SPs) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 2797th Thesis Exam at the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta on Thursday, February 5, 2026 with candidate Madarina Rozanah.

Madarina is a student of the Master of Islamic Studies program with a concentration in Islamic Thought. His thesis is entitled "The Implementation of the Teachings of al-'Adl al-Ilāhī in the Practice of Shi'ah Philanthropy (Case Study of the Imdad Mustadh'afin Institute and the Mustadhafin Fund)".

This research captures how the concept of God's justice, a fundamental pillar in Shi'a theology, is transformed into concrete action through philanthropic institutions to target the marginalized or mustadh'afin.

Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, Madarina delved into the management kitchen of two large institutions, namely Imdad Mustadh'afin and Dana Mustadhafin. Through in-depth interviews and field observations, he succeeded in mapping how religious doctrine is not just a dead text, but a breath that moves the wheels of inclusivity and social justice in society.

The first findings in this study reveal an interesting fact: although the two institutions stand on the same theological foundation, al -'Adl al-Ilāhī, they take different paths of implementation. This difference is proof that one theology can blossom in various forms of practice depending on the managerial vision of the institution.

Imdad Mustadh'afin was found to be inclined to maintain traditional philanthropic practices. The focus of the movement is more concentrated on the internal Shi'ah group, a model that prioritizes strengthening community solidarity in maintaining the continuity of its teachings and the specific welfare of its members.

On the contrary, Dana Mustadhafin appeared with a more modern and progressive face. It adopts an inclusive approach that transcends sectarian barriers, involving the wider community including non-Shi'ah. This approach shows that the spirit of divine justice can be positioned as a universal value that embraces humanity without limits.

Madarina also highlighted that the difference in approach has a direct impact on the fund management mechanism and the social relations that are built. The social impact produced by the two institutions also varies, but Madarina emphasizes that this difference is not triggered by differences in theological interpretations, but rather by adjustments to the socio-cultural dynamics of the local community.

Theoretically, this research provides new contributions that distinguish it from previous studies, such as the work of Amir Hossein (2023) who tend to be trapped in normative discussions of the Qur'an and jurisprudence. Madarina's research jumps further by proving that al-'Adl al-Ilāhī serves as a powerful normative framework to reduce social inequality in pluralistic Indonesia.

This thesis concludes that theology-based philanthropy has a significant role in building social harmony. Madarina Rozanah has succeeded in proving that in the hands of the right institutions, religious teachings can be transformed into real solutions to the problems of poverty and social exclusion in the country.

Madarina Rozanah successfully defended her thesis under the guidance of Prof. Amelia Fauzia, MA, Ph.D; Prof. Dr. Kholid Al Walid, M.Ag, and tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Yusuf Rahman, MA; Prof. Amelia Fauzia, MA, Ph.D; Prof. Dr. Kholid Al Walid, M.Ag; Prof. Dr. Rusli, S.Ag, M.Soc.Sc; Dr. Alvian Iqbal Zahasfan, SSI, Lc., MA.
