Auditorium of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS – The Graduate School (SPs) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 1710th Doctoral Promotion Exam in the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA on Thursday, July 30, 2026 with the promovendus Nailil Huda.

Nailil merupakan mahasiswa program Doktor Pengkajian Islam dengan konsentrasi Pendidikan Bahasa Arab. Disertasinya berjudul "Classroom and Extra-Curricular Curriculum in the Development of the Four Language Skills Based on the Cultural Environment of Non-Arabic Speakers at the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in Indonesia".

This research departs from the reality of Arabic language learning in Indonesia today. So far, many educational institutions are still stuck in classroom-based teaching with a dominant focus on cognitive and grammatical mastery. As a result, the space and opportunities for learners to practice Arabic in a real-life everyday context have become very limited.

This study specifically aims to analyze the integration of classroom and non-classroom curriculum at the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences (LIPIA) Jakarta, as well as uncover the role of the Arabic cultural environment in improving the four language skills for non-Arabic speakers.

In digging up comprehensive and systematic data, Nailil applies a qualitative approach with direct case studies at LIPIA Jakarta. Data collection was carried out in depth through three main techniques, namely official document analysis, structured interviews, and direct observation in the field.

In order to maintain the validity and accuracy of the data, the researcher applied the triangulation technique by discussing the results of document analysis, interview findings, and active involvement in observation. Conceptually, this research is framed with the theory of language learning for foreign speakers and the theory of language immersion theory.

The results of the study show that there is a very strong integration between the classroom and out-of-class curriculum at LIPIA. The total language immersion approach supported by the Arab cultural environment has proven to have a significant positive impact. The students are not only used to communicating verbally and in writing, but also able to use the fluent Arabic style like native speakers.

Although it presents a successful picture of holistic learning, this study is still a general study in photographing the improvement of four language skills. Therefore, Nailil encourages further researchers to examine aspects of language proficiency more specifically and correlate the relationship between the language environment and cultural variables in more depth.

Academically, this finding strengthens the view of Muhbib Abdul Wahhab (2015) who states that language learning is holistic and integrative. The results of this study are also in line with the research of Pradi Khusyufi (2022) and M. Fadlan (2024) who emphasized that integrated rather than partial extracurricular program management can significantly improve students' Arabic language achievement.

Theoretically, this study provides an important affirmation that learning Arabic for foreign speakers is an intentional process in order to optimize learning outcomes. This also refutes Noam Chomsky's thinking that language skills are just natural talents without the need for environmental engineering or special cultural formation.

This dissertation is expected to be a reference model for Arabic language educational institutions in Indonesia. The incorporation of an in- and out-of-classroom curriculum based on the cultural environment has proven to be an effective formula in producing graduates who are fluent and responsive to the Arabic language.

Nailil successfully defended his dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Achmad Satori Ismail, MA, Prof. Muhammad Zuhdi, M.Ed, Ph.D, Dr. Muhbib, M.Ag, and was tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Zulkifli, MA, Prof. Dr. Achmad Satori Ismail, MA, Prof. Muhammad Zuhdi, M.Ed, Ph.D, Dr. Muhbib, M.Ag, Prof. Dr. H.D. Hidayat, MA, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farkhan,  M.Pd, Dr. Mohammad Syairozi Dimyathi Ilyas, MA.

After paying attention to the dissertation writing, the comments of the examiner team and the promovenda's answers, the examiner team determined that Nailil graduated with the predicate of Very Satisfactory.  Nailil Huda is the 1710th Doctor in the field of Islamic Studies, doctoral program of the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.
