Nurhaliza Oktraviani Z's Thesis Exam, Integration of Tafsir and Psychology: The Personality of the Prophet Ya'qub as a Father Figure in the Qur'an
Auditorium of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS - The Graduate School (SPs) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 2813th Thesis Exam at the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 with candidate Nurhaliza Oktaviani Z.
Nurhaliza is a student of the Master of Islamic Studies program with a Concentration in Tafsir. His thesis is entitled "The Personality of the Prophet Ya'qub as a Father Figure in the Qur'an (Integration of Classical Tafsir with Psychological Science)".
The main focus of this study is to explore how the figure of the Prophet Ya'qub manages his grief and regulates his emotions when interacting with his children in the midst of a storm of repeated loss tests.
Through a qualitative method, Nurhaliza conducted a literature review of three monumental works: Tafsīr Jāmiʿ al-Bayānby at-Ṭ abarī, al-Jāmiʿ li Aḥkām al-Qurʾānby al-Qurṭubī, and Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-ʿ Aẓīm by Ibn Kathīr. These classical data were then analyzed using a psychological approach, especially related to the themes of grief, loss, and emotional defense mechanisms experienced by a human being when facing a crisis.
This research uses data collection techniques in a voluntaryḍū'ī (thematic) manner and is processed through thematic analysis. The results show that the personality of the Prophet Ya'qub was a dynamic process that developed significantly. These changes are clearly visible from the first loss to the second loss period, which is influenced by the duration of time, the context of the news received, and the maturity of the prophet's personality as the test progresses.
Nurhaliza succeeded in developing the findings of previous researchers, such as Elva Wijayanti and Khadijah Maklai, by offering a new synthesis. It combines the dual process model of coping with religious emotion to map the emotional dynamics of the Prophet Ya'qub more precisely. This provides a new perspective on how a great religious figure struggles with grief without losing his spiritual footing.
An interesting finding in this thesis reveals that the Prophet Ya'qub's grief process runs adaptively between the loss-oriented and recovery-oriented phases. In terms of emotional regulation, the Prophet Ya'qub is noted to be dominant in using attentional deployment and cognitive change techniques, where he consistently improves his point of view that Allah is the best planner behind every calamity.
The main argument put forward by Nurhaliza is that classical interpretation has great potential to be further developed through integrative analysis. Although prophetic status often puts Qur'anic figures in a seemingly "super" position, this study proves that there is a dilemmatic intersection between the human feelings of a father and the spiritual duties of a prophet, which ultimately strengthens his emotional management.
The results of this multidisciplinary integration show that the personality of the Prophet Ya'qub is not just a static symbol of patience, but a dynamic and adaptive emotional journey. This journey then gave birth to models of emotional regulation based on the principles of wisdom such as ṣabr jamīl (beautiful patience), kaẓīm (restraining anger), and tawakal which are very relevant as psychological guides for today's parents.
In closing, this thesis affirms a universal message that prophetic status does not erase the human side. Sadness and loss are natural traits, but through the portrait of the Prophet Ya'qub, Nurhaliza shows how spirituality can be an anchor that transforms deep sorrow into a power that brings wisdom and extraordinary peace of mind.
Nurhaliza successfully defended her thesis under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Hamka Hasan, MA, and was tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Yusuf Rahman, MA, Prof. Dr. Hamka Hasan, MA, Prof. Dr. Saifuddin Herlambang, MA, Dr. Abdul Moqsith Ghazali, M.Ag.
After paying attention to the thesis writing, the comments of the examiner team and the candidate's answers, the examiner team determined that Nurhaliza graduated with the predicate of Very Satisfactory. Nurhaliza Oktaviani Z is the 2813th Master in the field of Islamic Studies, in the Master's program of the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. (YES)
