SPs UIN Jakarta Holds National Seminar: Strengthening Research Methodology Through Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies
Auditorium Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, BERITA SPs — The Graduate School (SPs) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta has once again demonstrated its commitment to reinforcing academic traditions by hosting a National Seminar themed “Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Amidst a Changing Social and Political Order.” The event took place at the Auditorium Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA, on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
This scholarly gathering brought together 47 presenters from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. Strengthening interdisciplinary studies has now become an urgent necessity in order to respond to the rapidly shifting dynamics of the social and political order. This forum is designed as a strategic space for the academic community to test ideas, receive constructive feedback, and continuously elevate the quality of scholarly writing.

The National Seminar was officially opened by the Deputy Director of SPs, Prof. Dr. Yusuf Rahman, MA. In his remarks, he emphasized that presenting scientific articles at a national seminar forum for master’s program students can be claimed to fulfill the requirements of the Colloquium course.
Furthermore, the output articles from this seminar can also be converted as a component of the Journal Article Publication course, particularly targeting publication in Sinta 2 nationally accredited journals. This measure is expected to spur the writing productivity of master's students.
Meanwhile, for doctoral students, the output of presentation results published in reputable international journals can be claimed to fulfill the requirements of the International Journal Article Publication course. This integrative policy reflects the institution's seriousness in accelerating global-quality publication traditions.
The main panel session of the seminar featured three competent speakers from different fields of study, presenting a rich and comprehensive discussion. The three speakers were Prof. Dra. Hj. Nina Nurmila, MA, Ph.D, Ade Jaya Suryani, Ph.D, and Dr. Rahmad Hidayatullah, MA.
Prof. Nina Nurmila opened the first session by delivering a presentation titled "The Importance of Integrating Gender Perspectives in Islamic Studies." She underscored the importance of distinguishing between nature as an absolute biological aspect and gender as a dynamic social construction.

The application of a gender perspective is essential to eliminating various forms of discrimination, subordination, marginalization, stereotyping, double burden, and gender-based violence. In the religious realm, a gender-fair interpretive approach can be pursued through qira’ah mubadalah, the principle of ma’ruf, and substantive justice rooted in women's lived experiences.
The session continued with Ade Jaya Suryani, Ph.D, who presented on the topic "Digital Humanities: The Paradigm Shift of Islamic Research in Indonesia." He highlighted that Indonesia's internet penetration rate surged to 81.72% in 2026, with an estimated 235 million active users.
Digital humanities studies are not merely about using computers as auxiliary tools, but rather represent a discipline that explores changes in how knowledge is created and disseminated. Research methodologies have thus shifted from traditional close reading to distant reading, cultural analytics, as well as the utilization of text mining and Natural Language Processing (NLP).

Entering the third session, Dr. Rahmad Hidayatullah, MA thoroughly examined the theme "Remembering, Mobilizing, and Mediating Islam: Rethinking Islamic Studies in a Changing Social and Political Order." He explained that contemporary Islamic Studies must expand its unit of analysis from mere normative texts to social processes where Islamic meanings are produced.
These Islamic meanings move through three intertwined, non-linear cycles: Remembered through memory studies, Mobilized through social movement studies, and Mediated through digital infrastructure. This complexity requires young researchers to master combined skills such as memory work, network analysis, framing, and digital ethnography.
This inspiring series of panel sessions was followed by a colloquium session divided into eight parallel sessions. This session serves as a tangible manifestation of SPs UIN Jakarta’s commitment to grounding Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies amidst the dynamic currents of changing times. (Jay A)
