Syahrial Doctoral Promotion Exam, Study of Figurative Language in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim

Auditorium of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS: The Graduate School of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta held the 1638th Doctoral Promotion Exam in the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, on Wednesday, July 30, 2025 with Syahrial promovendus.

Syahrial is a student of the doctoral study program in Islamic Studies with a concentration in Arabic Language and Literature. Syahrial wrote a dissertation entitled "A Study of Figurative Language in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (Stylistic Perspectives and Social Transformation)"

This dissertation not only highlights the beautiful aspects of language, but also explores the significant contribution of figurative language to the understanding and social transformation of Muslims. Syahrial focuses his research on three main objectives: to examine the structure and pattern of figurative language in the saheeh hadith of Bukhari and Muslim, to analyze the philosophy behind the construction of the figurative language, and to explain its contribution to the social transformation of Muslims. This comprehensive approach offers a new perspective in understanding the textual and functional relevance of hadith in modern contexts.

Using the method of qualitative analysis with a literature study approach, Syahrial carefully examines the words, phrases, and clauses that contain figurative language in the books of Saheeh Bukhari and Muslim. His framework of analysis is enriched with the theory of Balaghah science as the main Arabic stylistic, supported by the functional semantic approaches of modern linguistic figures such as Halliday and Frawley. This combination of methodologies allows Syahrial to conduct an in-depth and layered analysis of the complexity of hadith language.

The results of his research show that the figurative language in the sahih hadith of Bukhari and Muslim is systematically arranged through the devices of tasybih, majaz, isti'arah, and kinayah. Uniquely, these elements not only embellish expression, but also contain a tremendous depth of ethical and social meaning. These findings confirm that the use of figurative language by the Prophet Muhammad PBUH is a reflective and evocative da'wah strategy, making it an important instrument in the process of social transformation of the ummah.

From a philosophical perspective, the figurative language style in the hadith represents essential existential and spiritual values, shaping the moral consciousness of the ummah. Syahrial explained that this is in line with the views of great thinkers such as Aristotle and Ricoeur, who viewed language as a bridge between inner meaning and social reality. This shows that the use of figurative language in the hadith has universal resonance and relevance across the ages.

One of the other interesting findings is the confirmation that figurative language is not only dominant in literary works, but also commonly used in religious texts, including the hadith of the Prophet PBUH. This finding supports the opinion of experts such as Anthony M. Paul (1970) and Gerrig and Gibbs (1994) who state that figurative language has wide applications in various fields, ranging from linguistic theory to everyday life. On the contrary, Syahrial's research refutes the views of Waluyo (2003) and Pradopo (2012) who claim that metaphors are more synonymous with literary works.

Syahrial successfully defended his dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Said Agil Husin Al Munawar, MA and Prof. Dr. Sukron Kamil, MA, and was tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Zulkifli, MA, Prof. Dr. Sukron Kamil, MA, Prof. Kusmana, MA, Ph.D, Prof. Dr. R. Yani'ah Wardani, M.Ag and Dr. Rizqi Handayani, MA.

After paying attention to the writing of the dissertation, the comments of the examiner team and the answers of the promovendus, the examiner team determined that Syahrial graduated with the title of Very Satisfactory. Syahrial is the 1638th Doctor in the field of Islamic Studies, in the doctoral program of the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. (JA)
