Wulandari's Thesis Exam, Behavior of Islamic Philanthropy Practices in the Zilenial Generation in the City of Bandung

Auditorium Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS - The Graduate School (SPs) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 2835th Thesis Exam at the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 with the Wulandari candidate.

Wulandari is a scholarship recipient of the BAZNAS RI scholarship program for the Master of Islamic Studies program with a concentration in Islamic Philanthropy, a thesis entitled "The Behavior of Islamic Philanthropy Practices in the Zilenial Generation in the City of Bandung".

This thesis aims to unravel how literacy, level of trust, and intention (intention) affect each other's charitable actions. Not only stopping at numbers and statistics, this research also explores the personal meaning and social dynamics behind the reasons of Bandung youth in carrying out the teachings of Islamic generosity.

To capture this reality in its entirety, this study applies a mixed methods sequential explanatory. Wulandari combines Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) quantitative modeling with a qualitative approach. The qualitative stage was carried out through in-depth interviews with eleven informants who were selected purposively and proportionate from the ranks of survey respondents.

The results of quantitative data testing showed that religious understanding (literacy) and the level of public trust together formed a very strong charitable intention. Even so, the influence of these two variables on philanthropic actions or practices is directly in the moderate category.

Interestingly, the dynamics of zilenial generosity show the fact that high trust in zakat or donation management institutions is not necessarily directly proportional to real actions. Trust in the institution has proven to be a very strong motivating factor, but it does not have a direct effect on the execution of charitable practices. This means that a zilenial can have a lot of faith in an institution, but not necessarily directly distribute funds.

From the results of qualitative search, this research succeeded in mapping three unique typologies of zilenial in charity. First,  the internalized type, which is a group that has made charitable activities a routine of life. Second, the reactive-spontaneous type, namely those who are encouraged to give alms because they are triggered by external motivations or certain moments. Third,  the restrained-aspirational type, which is a group that already has a very strong intention and moral drive to give charity, but the steps are stopped because they do not have adequate financial capabilities.

The findings of these three typologies confirm an important fact: the intention-behavior gap in some young people is actually rooted in the limitations of structural economic capacity, not because of their weak commitment or personal beliefs.

Academically, this research strengthens the research of Yusfiarto et al. (2020) who stated that literacy plays a role as a direct driver of generosity and zakat compliance. On the other hand, Wulandari's findings also criticized the results of the study by Putri and Yuliafitri (2025) which had mentioned that literacy did not have a significant effect on the zakat compliance of the younger generation. In line with the research of Evriyenni et al. (2025), this research at SPs UIN Jakarta concluded that the practice of Islamic philanthropy in Bandung is formed by three main pillars: literacy that provides understanding, trust that matures intentions, and financial capacity that realizes these intentions into real action.

Wulandari successfully defended his thesis under the guidance of Prof. Kusmana, MA, Ph.D and Dr. Rizqi Handayani, MA, and was tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Yusuf Rahman, MA, Prof. Kusmana, MA, Ph.D, Dr. Rizqi Handayani, MA, Prof. Dr. Zulkifli, MA, Prof. Dr. Rusli, S.Ag, M.Soc.Sc.

After paying attention to the thesis writing, the comments of the examiner team and the candidate's answers, the examiner team determined that Wulandari graduated with the predicate of Cum Laude. Wulandari is the 2835th Master in the field of Islamic Studies, in the Master's program of the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. (Jay A)
