Auditorium of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta, SPs NEWS: The Graduate School of the State Islamic University (SPs UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 1625th Doctoral Promotion Exam in the Auditorium Room of Prof. Dr. Suwito, MA SPs UIN Jakarta on Monday, June 30, 2025 with promovendus Yahya Komarudin.
Yahya Komarudin is a student of the Doctoral program in Islamic Studies with a Concentration in Islamic Religious Education. He wrote a dissertation titled "Internalization of Islamic Values in Homeschooling (Case Study on Homeschooling in Bandar Lampung)"
Yahya research stemmed from the need for a flexible and family-rooted Islamic character education, especially in the midst of the complexity of modern life. Using a qualitative case study approach and an analytical descriptive design, Yahya explores the process of internalizing Islamic values in homeschooling practices in Bandar Lampung. The research focus includes internalized values, the daily processes involved, as well as the supporting factors, inhibitions, and contextual solutions that emerge. Data was collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies, then analyzed using within-case analysis, cross-case analysis, coding, and data triangulation techniques to ensure the validity of the findings.
Theoretically, this study found that the implementation of Islamic values accumulated in daily homeschooling activities effectively formed genuine Islamic personality characteristics in students. The results of the study show that the internalization of Islamic values in homeschooling includes five main aspects: love for the Qur'an, worship practices, manners and ethics, appreciation of monotheism, and social piety.
Yahya also identified seven mutually integrated supporting factors in this internalization process: the central role of parents, curriculum flexibility, method innovation, supportive community, the use of technology, the home as a spiritual learning space, and post-activity emotional reflection. On the other hand, six main inhibiting factors were also revealed, including the limited capacity of parents, children's psychosocial dynamics, lack of variety of methods, the influence of the external environment, the weak reflection-evaluation system, and passive consumption of digital media.
In response to these challenges, the research not only stops at problem identification, but also develops seven innovative solution strategies. These strategies include strengthening the role of parents as Qur'anic murabbi, a multisensory-reflective approach for children, the development of differential modular curricula, the formation of value-based Islamic homeschooling communities, affective reflection-evaluation systems, Islamic media literacy, and the creation of adaptive learning environments.
The findings of this dissertation are in line with the views of experts such as Giddens who emphasize the importance of internalizing socio-religious values in daily life to form a strong personality. In line with Abuddin Nata, this research confirms that the character based on religious values is the core of Islamic education. In addition, this finding is also supported by Robert French and Sulieman Ibraheem Shelash Al-Hawary, who affirm the effectiveness of family-based character education in improving educational attainment and shaping children's morals.
Yahya emphatically refuted the skeptical view of religion-based homeschooling, especially the view expressed by Hara, who stated that homeschooling is difficult to develop children's social character effectively. Thus, this dissertation not only enriches the scientific treasure, but also provides a solid foundation for the development of holistic and effective Islamic homeschooling practices.
Yahya Komarudin successfully defended his dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Abuddin Nata, MA and Prof. Dr. Armai Arief, M.Ag, and was tested in front of a board of examiners consisting of Prof. Dr. Zulkifli, MA, Prof. Dr. Abuddin Nata, MA, Prof. Dr. Armai Arief, M.Ag, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farkhan, M.Pd, Prof. Siti Nurul Azkiyah, M.Sc, Ph.D and Dr. Suwendi, M.Ag.
