The History of SPs UIN Jakarta

SPs UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta was established in 1982. In its early establishment, the school was named as Faculty of Postgraduate studies (FPs) Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic Institute Jakarta (IAIN Jakarta). It was established based on the decree of Director General of Islamic Institutional Development Ministry of Religious Affairs Indonesia (H. Anton Timur Djaelani, MA) no. KEP/E/422/81.

The decree stated that State Islamic Institute Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta (IAIN Jakarta) is eligible to open a postgraduate program (PPs). The Director General decree was affirmed with the decree of Ministry of Religious Affairs number 78 year 1982, which declared a formal opening of Faculty of postgraduate program of State Islamic Institute Jakarta and appointed Prof. Dr. Harun Nasution as the dean. In 1992, the name of Faculty of Postgraduate Program (FPs) was changed into Postgraduate Program (PPs) and the designation of dean was changed into director.

FPs was initially established to enhance and develop the academic qualification of Islamic studies lecturers of higher education institutions, especially State Islamic Institute (IAIN). In line with the purpose mentioned, PPs IAIN Jakarta was initially opened as means to implement the ministry of religious affair’s project to enhance the academic qualification of lecturers at Islamic higher education institution (PTAI) and Islamic studies’ lecturers at non-religious based state higher education institution (PTU).

Initially (in the academic year of 1982/1983), students of FPs IAIN Jakarta were lecturers from various State Islamic Institute (IAIN) in Indonesia. Following that, in the academic year of 1985/1986, FPs IAIN Jakarta accepted students who are lecturers of Islamic studies at non-religious based state higher education institution (PTU). In 1990/1991, PPs IAIN Jakarta accepted students who are lecturers of Islamic studies at private higher education institution (PTAIS). Apart from that, FPs IAIN Jakarta also accepted overseas students, various Indonesian institutions, IAIN alumni or other higher education institutions, as long as the academic qualifications are fulfilled.

The history of SPs UIN Jakarta could not be separated from the role of Prof. Dr. Harun Nasution. It was his idea to establish this postgraduate program since he was appointed as the rector of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic Institute Jakarta (IAIN Jakarta). He publicly stated the significance of establishing an institution that facilitate an in depth, rationale, and comprehensive study upon Islamic teachings. He believed this effort will lead to the birth of muslim scholars who are able to respond and solve relevant socio-religious problems occurred in the society. This idea was positively responded and embraced by the academics and the founding members of IAIN Jakarta. More importantly, Prof. Dr. A. Mukti Ali (the minister of religious affairs of that period (1978-1982)), also supported the idea. He then formally supported the establishment of PPs IAIN Jakarta. Since then, PPs IAIN Jakarta is known as the first postgraduate program in Indonesia. Following that, a postgraduate program was established in State Islamic Institute Yogyakarta (IAIN Yogyakarta) and led by Prof. Dr. A. Mukti Ali.

The strategic development direction of PPs IAIN Jakarta has been formulated by Prof. Dr. Harun Nasution starting from the establishment of the postgraduate Islamic study program. This program was then developed into various disciplines based on the Islamic expertise formulated by the ministry of religious affairs of the respective era (stated in the decree of ministry of religious affairs). The discipline includes Islamic thought, syari’ah (Islamic jurisprudence), tafsir-hadits (qur’anic exegesis and hadith), dakwah, Islamic education, Islamic history and civilization, Arabic literature, and contemporary development in Islam.

In the early stage, PPs IAIN Jakarta opened only a master’s degree program focusing on Islamic study (dirasat Islamiyah). In the academic year of 1996/1997, a new program of study focusing on Islamic law (syari’ah) was then opened. Following that, more programs of study were opened. The details are as follow: Islamic law (syari’ah), Islamic thought, tafsir (Quranic exegesis) – hadith, Islamic history and civilization (were opened in the academic year of 1997/1998), Islamic Education, Arabic literature, dakwah and communication (were opened in the academic year of 1998/1999). In the academic year of 1999/2000, the contemporary development in Islam program was omitted and another study program namely Islamic economics was opened.

The doctorate degree program was opened in 1984 with one program of study namely Islamic studies. Starting from the academic year of 1998/1999 a new program of study namely Islamic law (syari’ah) was opened. Following that, more programs of study were opened in line with the programs opened in the master’s degree level.

In 2000, the master’s degree program was formally accredited with an “outstanding” mark by the National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education Institutions (BAN-PT) Department of Education and Culture as stated in the decree of National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education Institutions number 025/BAN-PT/Ak-I/S2/IX/2000 on the 19th of December 2000. Following that, in 2008, the program was re-accredited with “A” score. The same “A” score was achieved in the 2014 re-accreditation process, as it can be seen in the decree of National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education Institutions number 079/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/M/III/2014.

The doctorate degree program was accredited with “A” (outstanding) score in 2010 as stated in the decree of National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education Institutions number 002/BAN-PT/Ak-IX/S3/VI/2010 on June 11, 2010. Following that, the program was re-accredited in 2014 and 2015 with similar score as stated in the decree of National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education Institution number 3/715/2456/S3/2014 on December 16, 2014, and decree number 330/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/D/V/2015 in May 2015. The last-mentioned accreditation decree applied to May 2, 2020.
