Education System

Curriculum Structure

  1. The curriculum structure of Master’s Degree program includes: 1) Group of Cognitive Subjects which consist of matriculation subjects (0 units) and Compulsory Subjects (18 units); 2) Group of Specific Competency Subjects (12 units); 3) Group of General Competency Subjects which consist of research and thesis (8 units), and languages (0 units). The total amount is 38 units.
  2. The curriculum structure of Doctorate Degree program includes: 1) Group of Cognitive Subjects which consist of matriculation subjects (0 units) and Compulsory Subjects (26 units); 2) Group of Specific Competency Subjects (8 units); 3) Group of General Competency Subjects which consist of research and dissertation (14 units), and languages (0 units). The total amount is 48 units.

The matriculation subjects are provided to interdisciplinary students (both masters and doctors) who come from non-Islamic study backgrounds. These subjects are ment to provide a comprehensive introductory understanding of Islam. This effort is expected to aid them to construct integrated interdisciplinary scholarships, either from Islamic epistemological perspectives or other epistemological perspectives.

Components of the Study

  1. Program Magister
    1. Master’s Degree program is divided into two classes:
      1. Regular Classes which are designated for students from Islamic studies background
      2. Interdisciplinary Classes which are designated for students from non-Islamic studies background
    2. The study components of Master’s Degree program consist of 38 units that are designed to be completed within 4 semesters or less. The maximum length of study time is 8 semesters including thesis writing.
    3. Students who are not from Islamic study background should enrol in 3 subjects under the group of cognitive subjects
    4. Students could enrol in a maximum of 4 subjects in one semester. However, students should have successfully completed subjects from the group of cognitive and general competency subjects prior to enrolling into subjects under the group of specific competency subjects.
  2. Program Doktor
    1. Doctorate Degree program is divided into 2 classes with flexible arrangement:
      1. Regular Classes which are designated for students from Islamic studies background
      2. Interdisciplinary Classes which are designated for students from non-Islamic studies background
    2. The study components of Doctorate Degree program consist of 48 units that are designed to be completed within 4 semesters. The maximum length of study time is 10 semesters including thesis writing.
    3. Students graduated from SPs UIN Jakarta could apply for credit exemption on certain compulsory cognitive subjects that have been successfully completed during their study at SPs UIN Jakarta Master’s Degree Program.
    4. Students could enrol in a maximum of 4 subjects, including languages, in one semester. However, students should have successfully completed subjects from the group of cognitive and general competency subjects prior to enrolling into subjects under the group of specific competency subjects.

GROUP OF SUBJECTS

The group of subjects consist of:

  1. Group of Cognitive Subjects which include:
    1. Matriculation subjects. Non-Islamic study background Students from both Master’s and Doctorate Degree programs should enrol in these matriculation subjects. These subjects are prerequisite prior enrolling into subjects under compulsory cognitive, general competency, and specific competency subject groups. The matriculation subjects would be displayed as 0 (zero) unit in the academic transcript.
    2. Compulsory subjects. These are subjects that should be taken up by all students of SPs UIN Jakarta, both Master’s and Doctorate Degree programs.
  2. Apart from matriculation subjects, SPs UIN Jakarta also provides tutorial and advisory classes for certain topics for both Master’s and Doctorate students to achieve the program’s competency target.
  3. Group of Specific Competency Subjects. These subjects should be taken up by all students according to their previous academic background in line with the topic of their theses or dissertations and/or their target of expertise. These subjects could be taken up from the subjects provided by SPs UIN Jakarta, other universities, or individual study upon the approval and consultancy of the respected lecturers.
  4. Group of General Competency Subjects:
    1. The details are as follows:
      1. Arabic (TOAFL) and English (ETIC) abilities are both entry and completion requirements for all Master’s and Doctorate Degree students. Language ability should be proved with a valid certificate from authoritative language centers.
      2. Students who can not prove their language ability with a minimum score of 500 (for Masters) and 550 (for Doctorate) in either TOAFL (for Arabic) and/or ETIC (for English) or other standardized language testing system, should participate in a designated remedial program in their early academic year at centre for Languages Development of State Islamic University Jakarta (PBB UIN Jakarta).
      3. Students who have completed their undergraduate/postgraduate level from English speaking countries or Arabic speaking countries are released from the obligation to take up the designated remedial program.
      4. Students who have achieved the minimum requirement score will receive a certificate from Center for Languages Development of State Islamic University Jakarta (PBB UIN Jakarta). The certificate is valid for their study duration at SPs UIN Jakarta (both master’s and doctorate students)
      5. International Students should pass the Bahasa Indonesia test (TIPA) prior to their final examination.
      6. Students who have not successfully completed the language remedial program (Arabic and English) would not be able to enrol in any subjects in their early semester. The exemption will depend on their score result (sufficient score will be exempted).
      7. Participation in the language remedial program will not replace the requirement of TOAFL or TOEFL/ETIC certificate. It will only help the students to acquire both certificates. Language remedial program was designed to help students to obtain sufficient language skills in both Arabic and English, as requested by the school.
      8. Language remedial program is conducted in one semester (semester 1) in conjunction with Center for Languages Development of UIN Jakarta (PBB UIN Jakarta). Students who have not achieved the minimum requirement score in that semester, are required to improve their language skills individually until they achieve the minimum requirement score.
      9. Students who have taken up ETIC/TOAFL test for maximum of 2 years, but could not achieve the minimum requirement standard approved by SPs UIN Jakarta, could replace it with English Test (ET)/Ikhtibar Ta’hil al-Lughah Arabiyah (ITLA) conducted by Center for Languages Development of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta under the conditions approved by SPs UIN Jakarta
      10. The Languages remedial subjects would be displayed as 0 (zero) unit on the academic transcript.
      11. International students are required to understand Bahasa Indonesia through the language remedial program.

Research Proposal Examination

  1. Research Proposal that was originally a final assignment of Thesis/Dissertation proposal Seminar subject could be submitted for examination.
  2. Research proposal could be submitted for examination after being verified and approved by the supervisor. Students should also attach the result of plagiarism checker tool. The minimum standard of originality should at least be 80% or above. Apart from that, students should include a statement letter stating that they will revise their proposal based on the review provided by the supervisors.
  3. Students should pass their theses/dissertations proposal examination prior to semester 4 commences. Any overdue, will incur a proposal examination fee.
  4. Research proposal presentation should include the following components: a) background of the research; b) research problem identification, problem statement, limitation, and delimitation; c) purpose of the research; d) relevant studies, literature review which covers academic tensions and debates as well as relevant research findings; e) research design and methodology; f) the structure of the study; g) bibliography (minimum of 30 to 40 main references).

Comprehensive Examination

  1. Master’s and Doctorate Degree students should achieve a minimum of passing grade on the oral comprehensive examination.
  2. Comprehensive examination can only be undertaken by students who have passed all compulsory subjects and languages skill, both English and Arabic.
  3. Students should apply for comprehensive exam to the administrative office of the school (SPs UIN Jakarta) through online platform namely SIASPS (Academic Information System of SPs).
  4. The flow of comprehensive examination is as follow:
    1. Prior to the exam, students submit their application to the administrative office through online platform called SIASPS (Academic Information System of SPs): siasps.uinjkt.ac.id
    2. Comprehensive examination material will cover the following subjects: The science of Qur’an and Hadith, Islamic thought, and Islamic Law.
    3. Comprehensive examination will be carried out orally.
  5. The examiner team of oral comprehensive examination for Master’s Degree program consists of 2 (two) examiners, while the doctorate degree students will be assessed by 3 (three) examiners.

Colloquium

  1. Teses/dissertations could be submitted to colloquium with the following criteria: a) passing the verification test undertaken by the supervisors, b) providing a statement of revision after the verification, and c) providing the result of plagiarism checker which shows a minimum of 80% of originality score.
  2. During the process of writing the dissertations, students should at least participate and present in 1 (one) colloquium prior to the WIP-1 (work in progress 1). This WIP-1 is meant to strengthen the theoretical framework, research method, and the structure of the study. This should be done, at least, after finishing chapter 1 and chapter 2, and a maximum of 6 (six) months after receiving the supervisor/promotor designation letter.
  3. During the process of writing the theses, students should at least participate and present in 1 (one) colloquium prior to the WIP-1 (work in progress 1). This WIP-1 is meant to provide an overview and explicate the theses’ content. This should be done, at least, after finishing chapter 1, 2, 3, and 4, and a maximum of 6 (six) months after receiving the supervisor/promotor designation letter.
  4. Lecturers and students that will participate in the colloquium are recommended by the program of study’s officer and approved by the director of SPs UIN Jakarta.

Work in Progress (WIP) Examination

  1. During the process of writing the theses, students should undertake WIP (work in progress) once. This WIP is meant to provide an overview and explicate the theses’ content. This should be done, at least, after finishing chapter 1, 2, 3, and 4, and a maximum of 8 (eight) months after the colloquium.
  2. During the process of writing the dissertations, students should undertake 2 (two) types of WIP (work in progress): WIP-1 and WIP-2. The WIP-1 is meant to strengthen the methodology and theoretical framework of the study. This could be undertaken after finishing chapter 1 and chapter 2, and a maximum of 8 (eight) months after the colloquium. The WIP-2 is meant to provide an overview and explicate the dissertation’s content. This should be done, at least, after finishing chapter 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, and a maximum of 8 (eight) months after the WIP-1.
  3. Theses/dissertations could be submitted for examination in the WIP after having an approval from the supervisors and enclose the following documents: a) approval letter from the supervisors; b) approval authentication letter from the verifier (not supervisors); c) theses/dissertations’ statement of revision after the verification; and d) the result of plagiarism checker which shows a minimum of 80% of originality score.
  4. The WIP examination team are expected to provide comment, insights, recommendation, and critics for revising the theses/dissertations.
  5. The WIP examination team are expected to assess and mark the theses/dissertations that have been examined.
  6. The mark of the theses’/dissertations’ WIP examination are set up according to the pertained regulation
  7. Students should obtain the WIP examiners’ approval upon the revised theses/dissertations prior to submitting their theses/dissertations for the following examination process.

Preliminary Examination for Dissertations

  1. Dissertations that have been proved by the supervisors/promotors could be submitted for preliminary examination after passing the process of colloquium, WIP examinations, verification, and plagiarism check with a minimum of 80% of originality score.
  2. In the preliminary examination, the dissertations will be examined by a team of examiners which consists of a chief of examiner (who is also an examiner), 2 or 3 supervisors/promotors, and 3 examiners, two of them are professors.
  3. There would be an opportunity of having an external examiner (examiner that comes from outside the State Islamic University Jakarta) in the preliminary examination.
  4. Dissertations that have passed the preliminary examination should be revised in accordance with the comments, insights, recommendations, and critics from the examiners.
  5. Dissertations that have not passed the preliminary examination should be revised and re-examined after having an approval from the previous preliminary examination team.
  6. If the students failed in the second chance, there would be another one more chance of preliminary examination (the third preliminary examination).
  7. If the students failed in the third chance, then the dissertation will officially be declared as FAIL.
  8. The presentation in the preliminary examination should cover: a) background, b) research problem identification, problem statement, limitation and delimitation, c) aims of the research, d) significance and benefits of the research; e) relevant studies, literature review which covers academic tensions and debates, as well as the similarities and differences of the scope and focus of study with other research; f) a detail research design and methodology; g) results and findings; h) conclusion; i) similarity and differences of the results and findings with previous research or other types of scholarships.
  9. Students should come with the primary sources used in the dissertations and a voice recorder (and record the whole process) in the preliminary examination.

Thesis Examination

  1. Students from Master’s Degree program could apply for thesis examination after revising the theses, obtaining supervisors’ approval, and receiving the result of plagiarism checker which shows a minimum of 80% of originality score.
  2. Thesis examination is intended to present the research findings to the public. Thus, a lot of people are expected to come to this occasion.
  3. Students will mostly pass the thesis examination, unless valid reasons and proof to fail the theses are found, such as plagiarism.

Doctorate Promotional Examination

  1. Students from Doctorate Degree program could apply for doctorate promotional examination after revising the dissertations, obtaining supervisors’ and examiners’ approval, acquiring the verification letter, and receiving the result of plagiarism checker which shows a minimum of 80% of originality score.
  2. Doctorate Promotional examination is intended to present and promote the research findings to the public. Thus, a lot of people are expected to come to this occasion.
  3. Students will mostly pass the doctorate promotional examination, unless valid reasons and proof to fail the dissertations are found, such as plagiarism.
  4. The examiner team of doctorate promotional examination are expected to be the same team as the preliminary examination team.
